From Clean To Green: Reasons For Pool Water Discoloration

Pool Water Discoloration

Hello!! I am back again with yet another swimming pool related article. It took me some time to get back to you guys. But come on! It is not every day that a pool issue crops up in my neighborhood.

Honestly speaking! I am somewhat good at the pool repair stuff, and once I work my magic, you can be rest assured that the pool will not give any trouble for some time.

Above all, repairing pools is only my hobby, you guys. It is not my profession. But my family members are sure that I will make handsome revenue, if become a full-time pool repair man.

No thanks!!

The winter is long gone, and the summer is almost knocking on our doors. So, it is time to prepare the pool once again to beat the heat with wet splashes. My youngest daughter is showing extra interest in the pool.

She loves water and spends most of the time either by the pool or in the pool. So, when my princess said that it was time to prep the pool, then I had to obey her commands. Last weekend, I thought of taking off the covers.

I hope you remember that I only have a normal pool cover and not high tech ones as my in-laws have. My daughter was by my side all the time.

When I finally took off the cover, my daughter shouted “Ewwww!! What is wrong with the pool daddy?” My favorite pool that was crystal clear last summer has turned green like a swamp.

When my wife saw the condition, she could not stop laughing. I was rather annoyed with this behavior.

When I asked her, she said that I had spent too much time inspecting and repairing others’ pools and pumps.

My green pool is the proof that its time I turned my attention towards my own house. She was kind of right. So, it was time to get down to business once again.

Green pool indicates lack of maintenance

Yes! It's right! My pool was not maintained properly. Laugh all you want! Pool maintenance is a tricky task.

I always fish out leaves, twigs, and other debris, which fall in the water. Apparently, that is not enough.

Running the filter regularly is also not enough. I did not have to spend too much time on the internet, searching for the cause of this green water.

My wife was quick to come to my rescue! Yes, guys! She!! Her parents always had a pool. So, she was aware of this condition.

She quickly suggested checking the chlorine balance, or algae growth. She had faced a similar situation at her place. Thank god I was not dating her back then!

Too much algae growth in water

Algae are plants, which grow in water. There is no exact reason why it happens. When it gets moisture in abundant amounts, and the right temperature, it develops.

Low maintenance and lack of movement in the pool also encourage its growth.

Algae not only float on the pool water, but also attach to the walls, and floor of the pool. It happens when the algae growth exceeds normal level.

Presence of this plant in the pool water will not only make the water greenish but will also make the water unsafe for swimming.

If you swim in algae-infested water, then you can develop skin infection and hair problems. So, I made sure none of my kids, or dog ventured near the pool.

The last thing that you want to do is turn on the filter if pool water has algae. The plants will get into the filter, and clog it. That will be an added issue. Trust me! You do not want that.

Malfunction of the pool pump filter

Algae infested water cannot be cleaned with the pool filter. But if your filter is not working, then it can trigger the growth of these green plants, which can rob the pool of its glorious look.

You must have read my article on cleaning pool filter cartridges. Wait, what? You haven’t? Well! Then go read that first.

It is common for filters to stop working. Apart from technical issues, it happens when something gets stuck in the filters.

When the water circulation stops, stagnant water offers an ideal breeding field for the algae.

Fungi growth will soon follow algae, and the situation will turn from bad to worse. So, it is best to keep the pool pump filter in perfect condition, at all times.

Inadequate levels of Chlorine

Any individual who has a pool will know about the importance of chlorine in maintaining the color, and hygiene of the pool.

Adding chlorine not only prevents the pool water from stain but also keeps the germs away.

The absence of proper chlorine concentration in the water will encourage the growth of fungi and algae in the pool water.

If you do not want to face a situation as I did, as soon as you remove your automatic pool cover, then make sure that chlorine level in the pool is adequate.

If you are located in a warm area, then you normal chlorine will not be enough to meet the requirements. Purchase some strong algaecides, which will triumph over these minute green plants.

pH imbalance in the pool water

pH imbalance is another reason that can turn the pool water cloudy. Even a person, who is not aware of the adverse effects of algae infection, will not feel the urge to get into a pool that has greenish and cloudy water.

It is too uninviting. I was unable to look at my pool for more than two minutes at a stretch. It felt like my whole body was itching, even though I was standing far from the water.

pH balance of the water must be kept neutral, at 7.4. In case it goes below this level, you will suffer from a burning sensation in your mucous membranes, and eyes. If the acidity of the water increases, then it can also affect the pool pump filter, especially the cartridges.

On the other hand, if the water becomes highly alkaline, then it will react with the chlorine, and prevent it from working its magic.

Chlorine will not be able to disinfect pool water properly if the pH level of the water goes above 7.4. It will make way for cloudiness, and discoloration of your pool.

You will be happy to know that I was able to tackle this problem on my own as well. What does this mean? It means another article on that is on its way guys. Trust me!

Getting rid of algae is a tough task. When I was only half way through the challenge, I had to bring in extra hands to do the scrubbing.

Yes! I may look invincible in pool related matters, but even Super-Man needed to join hands with Bat-Man, and Wonder Woman in “Dawn of Justice.” So, cut me some slack.

Conclusion

Everything is correlated. If you wish to keep the pool in perfect condition, then you will have to turn on the filter, as well as maintain proper pH balance of the water.

Be it an inexpensive pool cover, or a costly automatic pool cover, it will also keep external dirt away. Unwanted algae growth plays havoc with the pool filter cartridges as well.

How To Test Salt Level In The Pool?

How To Test Salt Level In The Pool?

As a father, it is my primary duty to ensure the health and well-being of my kids. I am ready to take on the entire world to safeguard my kids. Which father won’t do the same, right? The pool that brought smiles to the faces of my family members was also responsible for a lot of pain and tears.

I must admit it was my fault. I should have been more careful about maintaining the chemical balance in the pool. Remember how my youngest daughter loves the pool? A slight imbalance in the pool salt level gave her an eye infection.

My baby was unable to sleep for two nights. We took her to the doctor, but only a father knows how it hurts when you see your daughter suffering, and you cannot do anything to comfort her.

Automatic pool chlorine generator

I used to add chemicals and chlorine manually to maintain the pH level in the pool. But recently, I installed a pool chlorine generator. The main function of the machine is to create chlorine in swimming pool directly.

The device automatically maintains the level of adequate chlorine in the water. Due to this, I could save a lot of money and space on the purchase and storage of chlorine-based product containers respectively.

Never rely on the machine blindly

Even experts make mistakes. I made the mistake of trusting the machine blindly. You should not do the same. If I had checked the chlorine level manually, my daughter would not have suffered so much.

One cannot predict when a machine will malfunction. Thus, you must always keep a manual salt level test kit handy. You can either purchase a Taylor Test Kit as I have or bring home any of the portable modern salt testers. TekcoPlus 6 in 1 or the LaMotte Pocket Tester are two of my favorites. Chlorine balance has several advantages. It prevents the growth, and multiplication of germs.

It also keeps water discoloration at bay. If the level of salt in pool water is correct, then it will discourage the growth of fungi and algae as well.

Anyhow, here, I will give you a step by step guide to test the salinity level of your pool water. If you have any pocket tester, then all you need is to take some water in the tester cup and dip the sensor.

The readings will appear on the display monitor. As per my experience, these testers are very accurate and consistent. I am rather an old school and like to depend on numbers and my senses.

Step 1 – Collect a water sample

Whether you have a pool cover or not, you should never collect water from the water surface.

I went towards the deeper end of the pool and immersed my hand around 12 to 18 inches below the water line. It is the ideal depth to collect the water sample. It allowed me to obtain uncontaminated water from the pool.

Step 2 – Prepare the Taylor Salinity Test Kit

The Taylor Test Kit comes is a cute blue box. It purchased it from an online store, and the delivery rather quick. As soon as I got the kit, I got down to business. I know that the ideal salt balance in the pool water should be anything between 3000 ppm to 3500 ppm.

The box contains a small jar, where the testing will take place, a small bottle of Chromate Indicator, and a little container of Silver Nitrate reagent. Make sure you are out of the house when doing this test. If the chemicals get in touch with your clothes, the stains will never come off.

Step 3 – Prepare the water sample

Once I placed all contents of the test kit on the table, it was time to start the test. I poured the water sample that I had collected from the pool into the jar. The test can be performed with just 10 ml of water.

Once I poured the water into the testing jar, I poured only one drop of Chromate Indicator in it. Then I shook the water in a circular motion so that the two liquids mix well. It has a pale yellow color.

Step 4 – Adding Silver Nitrate to the water

It is mandatory that you add the Silver Nitrate, drop-wise in the water, and keep shaking it after adding two drops. Keeping an accurate count is also imperative.

These numbers will determine the salt level in the pool water. So, I kept on adding two drops of the reagent, and the mixed the liquid, by moving the jar in a circular motion.

Step 5 – Change in the watercolor

After adding 21 drops of the reagent, the clear liquid changed into a milky white salmon flesh color. The change in tint is the indicator that the test is complete. Remember I told you that it is mandatory to keep count of this? Well! Now it will come to the forefront.

Step 6 – Do the number crunching

As it took 21 drops of the reagent to turn the transparent water into a milky white salmon flesh tint, I multiplied 21 to 200. It is the basic calculation technique to figure out the salinity level in the pool. The product of the two numbers is 4200.

Thus, the salt level in my pool was 4200 ppm, which was way above the normal level. My friend has a pocket tester. I borrowed it and checked the salinity level another time. The machine also gave me similar reading. Thus, I concluded the water sample testing.

I did not wait for long to correct this mistake. I called the mechanic and got the machine repaired pronto. When the health of my family is on the line, I don’t want to take matters in my hand and acquire experience.

I can do that in future as well. The experts used their professional tools to measure the salinity again, before adding necessary chemicals to make the water pH neutral. I will never forget the sight of my daughter sobbing. I will purchase a mini salinity tester to keep the same situation from reoccurring.

Conclusion

It is not difficult to maintain the Chlorine balance if you make use of the right products, at proper intervals. Apart from chlorine, other dirt participles can contaminate the water as well.

Using a pool cover keeps these issues at bay, and your pool water will be clean and hygienic. Chemicals and chlorine balance is a must for the upkeep of pool water quality.

How To Put Chemicals In Pool For First Time?

pool chemicals

Will it not be awesome to get up in the morning, and take a sip out of your coffee cup, by the side of your private pool? Sounds like a dream, right? Well! Lucky for me, I get to relive this dream each and every day. And no! It does not get boring after first few months.

Your relation with the pool is far more dynamic that you can ever imagine. Your marriage may get boring after some months, but your pool will continue to surprise you till the last day. Any man who denies this is definitely lying. And I will find myself sleeping on the couch for several nights if my wife ends up reading this article.

So, I am keeping my fingers crossed, and you better pray for the safety of your “friendly pool pump expert,” if you want to continue getting interesting, and informative article from me.

Pool waters vs. regular water

When my parents moved to the city, my brother and I were rather young. We did not have a private pool, but my father’s friend, Mr. Collins did. We used to visit his place during the summers. I was in the same class with his son, and we were buddies.

Wondering why I am taking a stroll down memory lane? Well! You need to read a bit more to figure it out. As I said, I knew nothing about pool or pool water back then. One day, we were playing by the side of the pool. Yes! It is dangerous, but boys will be boys. Anyways, I felt thirsty and scooped up a glass of water from the pool.

As I was about to drink it, Mr. Collins stopped me. He was the first person who told me that pool water was far different from regular tap water. I did not understand what he meant back then, but now I do.

Regular tap water contains minerals, which are good for health. But pool water contains chemicals, which can upset your stomach if you swallow it. I regularly check the chemical balance in the pool to ensure safety and water quality. I empty my pool and refill it after every six months.

I attach a big hose to the fire hydrant and fill in the pool. It is less expensive. You can opt for water delivery trucks, or get water from a nearby well or lake. Make sure to filter pool water before you pour it in the pool.

List of necessary chemicals

Stella is my cousin, and she has recently moved in the neighborhood. We helped them to set up. Hey! That is what family does! Once unpacking was complete, Stella asked me to help start-up her pool.

Between you and me, I knew this was coming. After all, they do not call me “pool expert” for nothing. So, I used the same fire hydrant to fill her pool. Now it was time to add the chemicals. I rushed to the store and picked up a few necessary items.

Make sure you have these if you need to take care of a similar situation.

  • Scale and stain preventer
  • Shock Chlorine Granules
  • Chlorine tablets
  • pH regulators
  • Cyanuric Acid as a stabilizer
  • Clarifiers and Algaecide
  • Chemical balance test kits
  • Setting up the pool

Make sure that you do the calculations as to the proportion of each chemical that needs to go in the water. You do not want to mess up the pH balance of water. The amount of chemicals will differ according to the water content in the pool.

Step 1 - Adjust the Alkalinity and pH level at first

I always add those chemicals, which affect the alkalinity and pH level of the pool water. As per my experience, if you nail these factors, then other steps will be as smooth as swimming in cool water on a hot day! As the TA of Stella’s pool water was more than 120 ppm, I added pH decrease to adjust the water quality. If the TA were less than 80 ppm, I would have added alkalinity Increaser. Once alkalinity was done, it was time to test the pH again. I always keep the pH level of pool water between 7.2 to 7.6. Anything more or less needs adjustments.

Step 2 - Maintaining Proper Calcium level in water

When I add chemicals to my pool, I do not dump all ingredients at once. I follow a certain order that makes the task easy, safe and 100% satisfactory. Some of the chemicals tend to reach more in the presence of sunlight.

I am aware of these things by now. So, I picked a cloudy and less humid day to work on Stella’s pool. Our area falls in hard water belt, and this makes use of Calcium hardness increasing chemicals necessary.  I kept on adding this chemical till the water reached a Calcium level of 180 t0 200 ppm.

Step 3 – Adjusting the Cyanuric levels

Cyanuric acid is an essential chemical that you need to add to the pool, if you desire to maintain the quality of water. It acts as a stabilizer. As Stella’s pool was filled for the first time, the level of Cyanuric acid was very low.

Adding Chlorine tables did increase the level of this stabilizer, but more was needed. Thus, I had to pour more cyanuric acid into the water. The stabilizer will prevent the chlorine in the water to react, and turn the water cloudy, in the presence of sunrays. I added 3 lbs of Cyanuric acid for 10,000 gallons of water. Stella had two kids. I was very cautious while adding these chemicals to the pool.

A small miscalculation from my side can cause problems for them. I don’t want them to suffer as my daughter did.

Step 4 – Preparing the water with chlorine

Remember the chlorine granules and tablets I bought? Finally, I added them to maintain a proper chlorine level in the water. The granular chlorine will shock the water, and prevent the buildup of germs and fungi. I also added Algaecide for maintaining the quality of water for long.

Step 5– Time to bring out the chemical test kits

I knew the chemicals would take around a day to work. So, I put up a makeshift pool cover, to protect the water from dirt or sunlight, during the next 24 hours. On the third day, I switched on the pool pump to filter the water. Once it was done, I allowed the water to rest for eight hours. Then I pulled out my chemical test kit to check if everything was in order or not. My efforts paid off, and the chemical equilibrium was exactly as I wanted it to be.

    Conclusion

So, friends! It does not matter whether you have an automated pool cover or not. Maintaining a proper chemical balance in the pool and optimum pH balance are cardinal aspects. If you mess it up, you will find yourself in a sticky situation. Test and filter the water as per norms, and your pool will only offer enjoyment.

How Much Does a Pool Cost Per Month In Electricity?

Hey guys! Welcome back to yet another informative pool session with me, your friendly neighborhood pool pump expert.

Thanks to my friends, I have acquired enough knowledge about pools and related topics.
I must admit that some of the tasks were challenging. Many times, I was unsure whether I would succeed or not.

But the support of my friend and family kept me going. My wife used to complain about my new found passion.

But now she understands that I love her as much as I like taking on pool related projects. So, she is ok with the entire arrangement, as long as I take her out on alternate Sundays.

I thought I was only popular among my friends. I had no idea that the news has spread like wildfire even in my office.

A few weeks ago, my boss summoned me to his cabin. I don’t really get called into the boss’s chamber that often.

So, I was rather rattled. When I knocked, he asked me to come in, and I took a seat. In the beginning, he asked a few questions about my assignments.

The more he asked, the more I got scared. Last time he took so much interest in my colleague’s projects, the boss ended up firing him. After few agonizing minutes, he finally came to the real topic.

“So, how is your part-time job taking shape?” he asked. I did not know how to respond, and kept staring at his face.

Finally, he took pity on me, and started laughing. “I am talking about your pool pump repair works. I hear you are rather good at it.”

Thank god! I was not getting fired. At least not today! After a bit of light chit-chat, he brought up a topic that I have been in love with.

Yes! You guessed it right. He asked me about swimming pool and pool pumps. I may not be able to impress him with my task, but I will definitely earn some accolades in this case.

Electric cost of running a pool

My boss has purchased a new home. It is a luxurious mansion, and comes with two separate pools.

Rich people have their own standards to maintain I guess! Anyways, one is a normal pool, but the other one has an in-ground hot tub.

He still had not used the pools as they needed some repair. He knows that maintaining a pool is no mean task.

It is rather expensive as the pool pumps and filter work on electricity. So, he wanted to ask me about the electricity bill that he will have to pay in future.

Over the months, I have done a lot of research on pool-related matters. So, I can tell that the electricity bill will depend on several factors.

Apart from your location, you need to consider the charges of your power company. If you have a pool that holds 10,000 to 20,000 gallons of water, then running the filter for 6 to 8 hours will be ideal.

For this, the power companies can charge around $35 to $40 on a monthly basis.

Electricity charges depending on the filter

In my experience, I have seen four types of pumps and filters so far. People mostly opt for two-speed variable pumps, single speed pumps, heat pumps, and in-ground hot tubs.

As each of these pumps operates differently, you can expect a difference in electricity bill as well.

    Two-speed variable pumps

Two-speed variable pumps are a popular choice among homeowners as they assist in filtering the pool water effectively.

These filters operate at two different speeds. If you want to conserve electricity, then it is best to keep the motor speed low.

In case you need to filter and prep the water fast, you need to turn up the knob. It will consume more power than usual.

Any household that has this kind of pumps needs to pay $30 to $50 extra for power.

    Single speed pumps

Single speed pumps operate at a uniform speed. So, it takes more time to filter the water through and through once.

I have gathered from my experience that it is best to turn on the pool pump once each day, and let it complete one cycle.

Doing this twice regularly keeps water clean as well as hygienic. If you have installed a single speed pump, then you need to pay anything between $75 and $150 each month, for running the pool pump.

    Heat pumps

Heat pumps are a must for all homes with a pool. These pumps not only filter the pool water but also increase the temperature of the water.

This water heating feature requires more electricity. It comes in handy during the winters. They heat the water, and you can enjoy a swim without worrying about the icy cold water.

Limited use of these heat pumps will up the electricity bill by $50 only. If you use this feature a lot, then you are looking towards an additional electricity expenditure that will amount to $150.

If you do not have pool covers, then these heat pumps will need more time to increase the temperature of water.

    In-ground hot tubs

Remember I mentioned earlier that my boss has an in-ground hot tub? Well! If he runs the machine often, then he will have to pay around $300 more for electricity bills, per month.

The in-ground pools use less energy than the in-ground hot tubs.

All this time when I was talking about pool pump running and electricity cost, my boss didn’t say a word, except for the occasional “hmm!!” Once I finished, he stood up, and walked towards the water filter.

He poured two glasses of water, and gave one to me. Then he took a deep breath, and said “It seems I made a mistake by selecting a house with two pools.

Now I am in twice the mess.” I could tell that he was impressed with my knowledge about pool pumps.

Yes, folks! Maintaining the pool is an expensive affair. But there are several ways to reduce the electricity consumption, and the resultant bill, if you keep your eyes open.

I try to keep the pool covered at all times during the winter to prevent the water from becoming too cold.

I have strictly instructed the kids not to use the pool in winters, so I don’t need a water heater.

That saves a lot of cash. If you know some ways to lower the cost of running a pool pump, then do share it with me.

    Conclusion

Running a filter once or twice daily is a must for maintaining the pool water quality. The pool covers not only shield the water from dirt but also help in trapping the heat that the water releases.

If you can trap this heat, then the installation of a heat pump does not become mandatory.

How Many Bags Of Salt Are Needed To Startup A Pool?

How Many Bags Of Salt Are Needed To Startup A Pool?

Hello guys! According to weather experts, this year, summer will be long and hot. While some might not like the news, for people who like to spend time in the pool, it is like music to their ears.

By now, you are well aware of the fact that every member of my family falls into the second category. My wife used to think that a private pool is nothing but an extra expense. Luckily, some of my enthusiasm about pool related stuff has inspired her.

Now she encourages me to take on pool projects. Sometimes I wonder why she had such a change of heart. Anyways, as long as she is happy, I am glad as well.

Pool startup: Pay attention to small details

My sudden love and expertise in pool related matters have encouraged my friends to invest in properties, which come with pools. Barry came over to my place a few months back and said that he was buying a new home.

When he mentioned that the house has a massive pool, I knew I was going to tackle another pool startup project. He moved in with his family about a month back, and now that he is all set, it is time to take on the big project. So, last Saturday, I reached his home early in the morning and inspected his pool.

The pool was massive! He asked his brother to come over, and three of us started work on the pool. I tackled the basics, and they were following everything I was saying like obedient students. I like to pay attention to details when I am prepping a pool.

I removed the pool cover and was surprised to see that the pool was perfectly clean. Barry told me that he had hired some professionals to clean the pool.

They had done a good job. So, it was time to refill the pool with fresh water. Once the pool was full, I started work on adjusting the salt level in the pool.

    Chlorinator machine is a must

I keep on mentioning that it is crucial to maintain the overall salt level in pool water. So, Barry had already installed a chlorinator machine.

But it will not produce any salt unless there is sufficient chlorine in the water to start with. So, it was time to add salt to the pool water. Ideally, the salt level in the pool water must be between 3500ppm to 7000ppm.

If anyone maintains this level, then the chlorinator will create and maintain salt concentration in the pool perfectly. No matter what type of water you use, it will have some amount of salt in it.

You need to adjust the salt level according to that. So, I used a salt testing kit to measure the overall salt level in the pool. It was on the lower side of the bar and meant that I needed some bags of salt to increase the salinity level.

    Purchase good quality salt

You can either purchase salt bags from the online store or make a quick trip to the swimming pool maintenance store. Since the supermarket has a good collection of pool salts, I opted for the latter.

Barry went with me, and we opted for good quality swimming pool salt bags. From my prior experience, I can say that rock salt is not an ideal choice.

How many bags you really need?

The stores will try to sell more salt bags. You can prevent extra expense if you use my tip. There is a perfect way to figure out exactly how many bags you require. It is simple math.

For every 1000 ppm increase in salinity level, you need to add 0.5 bags of salt to 10000 liters of water. In case your pool contains 20,000 liters, you need to add one full salt bag. I have prepared a table that will help you in the calculation.

    Raising ppm by

    10000 liters

    20000 liters

    40000 liters

    60000 liters

    1000 ppm

    Half a bag

    1 salt bag

    1.9 bags

    2.9 salt bags

    2000 ppm

    1 salt bag

    2 salt bags

    3.8 salt bags

    5.8 salt bags

    3000 ppm

    1.5 salt bags

    3 salt bags

    5.8 salt bags

    8.6 salt bags

    4000 ppm

    2 salt bags

    4 salt bags

    7.7 salt bags

    11.5 salt bags

    5000 ppm

    2.4 salt bags

    5 salt bags

    9.6 salt bags

    14. 4 salt bags

    6000 ppm

    3 salt bags

    6 salt bags

    11.5 salt bags

    17.3 salt bags

This table will make it easy for you to add the exact quantity of salt that your pool needs. As for Barry’s pool, we had to purchase around ten bags of salt. His pool holds approximately 40,000 liters of water. Honestly speaking, there was no need to buy a house with such a humongous pool.

    Adding Salt To The Pool

Adding salt to the pool is really easy. All you need to do is tear open the salt bags, and pour the salt all over the water surface. Yes! It is that simple. Even my daughter can do that. We kind of enjoyed this task.

Once all salt bags were emptied in the pool, it was time to turn on the pool filter. As the water circulated, it helped in dissolving the salt faster. I asked Barry to keep it on for next 24 to 35 hours.

It was enough time for the salt to dissolve. I only helped him to start up the pool. For the rest of the chemical treatments, and following water testing, he hired a professional.

His pool is completely ready now, and he has invited us to a pool warming party. So, I am all set to have a nice time with Barry next weekend.

    Conclusion

Following these tips will allow any individual to attain success in a pool startup project. Set the chlorinator so that it produces just enough salt to maintain the salinity level of the pool water between 3500ppm to 7000ppm.

Anything more or less must be corrected immediately. In case homeowners are not confident, they can hire the services of a professional.

How To Fill A Saltwater Pool For The First Time?

How To Fill A Saltwater Pool For The First Time?

Choices make our lives that much more interesting. The presence of variations prevents monotony and allows us to explore other horizons. So, why is a guy who blabbers about technical aspects, suddenly talking in a philosophical tone? Well, folks! You will be happy to know that technological advancements have made several swimming pool options possible.

No, I am not talking about the design, pattern, or the heating technique of the pools. Designs and layout do play an important role in enhancing the aesthetics. But when it comes to the water quality, you can pick among two options. You can either have a freshwater swimming pool or opt for a saltwater pool.

    Benefits of the saltwater pool

Many people ask me whether it is good to have a saltwater pool. Well! Both fresh and saltwater pools have their pros and cons. Let me clear the air first. Taking a dip in a brackish swimming pool is nothing like swimming in the ocean. The two water types are as different as chalk and cheese.

Fresh and saline pools require a different set of chemicals for adjusting the water quality. The saltwater pools are somewhat good for skin and offer relief to people suffering from joint pains. I often find myself taking a swim in William’s saltwater pool. He is not a royalty but desires to be treated like one. No one cares about his wishes, not even his pet dog.

But I must admit that his lavish infinity pool turns me green with envy. He knows it and enjoys it as well. I get more relaxation in his saltwater pool than in my freshwater pool. William lives in his ancestral mansion and drains the entire pool out after every six to seven years. Fortunately for me, this year is the seventh year. You must have guessed by now that I have acquired the experience of filling a saltwater pool for the first time.

    Necessary things and the process

Whether it is filling the pool for the first time, or refilling the pool, you will need the same tools to accomplish the task successfully. The procedure is also same. Thanks to William, I will no longer have issues in filling any pool for the first time. I reached his home early to observe the task from the beginning.

To fill a brine pool, you need the following things:

    • Alkalinity alteration kit
    • Hard water test strips
    • pH measuring strips
    • Clarifier
    • Sequestering agent

Step 1 – Testing The Quality Of Salt Water

I was sure that a rich guy like William would not draw water from the nearby fire hydrant. A huge tanker arrives in front of this mansion, and few experts attached the hose with the tanker and poured the salt water in the pool.

As he had hired tanker service providers, there was no need to check the quality of water. But it is better to be sure about the overall chemical content of water. According to this chemical concentration, you will have to add other chemicals to adjust the pH of pool water.

I made use of the alkalinity test kit to measure the concentration of respective chemicals.

Step 2 – Aiming For The Perfect Water Balance

Too acidic or too basic water will harm your skin equally. If the level of other non-chloride compounds is not monitored, then the water will become too harsh. It will irritate your eyes and mucous membrane.

So, I pulled out my pH kit and tested a batch of the water sample. When the pool was half filled, I helped William to add anti-stain chemicals in the water. You can pick any brand as per your wish but is better to opt for the reputed companies.

Step 3 – Addition Of The Clarifier

When working with a briny water pool, adding the proper amount of clarifier is a must. Skipping this step can be fatal. When the pool was almost full, I added the clarifier into the water.

The chemical takes some time to react with the other substances present in the water. It not only makes the water less hard but also assists the pool filter to strain out unwanted debris better.

Step 4 – Adding Salt To The Water

A saltwater pool will not be complete if you do not put some salt in it. We are not talking about table salt. You will find special salt bags in the pool maintenance stores. These are compositions, specially prepared for swimming pools.

Now, you cannot drop in as many bags as you want. It is here that the importance of an expert comes to the forefront. In William’s case, I was the expert. The amount of salt that needs to go in depends on the water carrying capacity of the pool.

Once we added the salt, it was time for non-chlorine shock chemicals. I added one pound of it for every 10,000 gallons.

Step 5 – Circulating The Chemicals And Salt

Once I poured all necessary materials in the pool, it was time to switch on the pool pump. I had very high hopes on William as he had seen a pool since his childhood.

I figured that he did not know much about pool maintenance when he asked about the purpose of turning on the pool pump filter. Come on, dude!! Even my baby girl knows that running the water through the filter allows the chemicals to mix well.

When that was done, I wrapped up for the night. I only returned to check the pool water once 24 hours were over.

Step 6 – Adjusting Minor Imperfections

While doing the final water test, I found that the pH was a little high. I was aiming to achieve anything between 7.2 to 7.8. So, I had to add some pH reducing chemicals and rechecked the water till it attained a perfect balance.

As he had a chlorinator, I set the dial amid 1 and 3 ppm level. It will produce adequate amounts of the necessary element to maintaining optimum water quality. Before I left, I told William to keep an eye on the chlorinator.

He was happy that his pool was ready for the summer, and I cannot wait to take a dip in this deluxe pool again.

    Conclusion

You may not have the budget to get an infinity pool, but you can easily empty your freshwater pool, and transform it into a briny water pool. Proper upkeep will extend its longevity. For this, you need to ensure that the pool pump filter is working at its best capacity. Do clean the filter cartridges at regular intervals.

How To Soften/Reduce Hardness In Swimming Pool Water

How To Soften/Reduce Hardness In Swimming Pool Water

Swimming Pool is a great place to rejuvenate with your family. I feel there can’t be any other better way to spend your weekend and vacations.

Lately, I observed some deposits on the pool surface and similar patches along its sides. My immediate action was to empty the pool and clean it with soap and vinegar solution. It got cleaned but the same deposits reappeared after a few weeks.

Then I recalled an infomercial I saw during a movie about water hardness in our area and how it can be handled by some chemical treatment. I quickly related my pool’s problem with water hardness.

I did some research and learned that the hard water affects the pool surface as well corrodes the plumbing of the pool. It could also end up in damaging the whole pipes and pump system if the hardness levels are extremely high.

The first time you see that the pool water is looking cloudy it must ring warning bells for you. Wait no more to try some random tricks for cleaning the water. Get the pool water tested for hardness level and follow the prescribed remedies.

Read along for a basic understanding of the problem and then proceed to spend your money on the right treatment. It must not be delayed at any cost because if you do you may end up paying a huge bill for damaged plumbing and hard to clean pool surface that can be corrected only by replacing it.

What are the Reasons for Water Hardness?

Pool water can get affected by presence of elements like copper. Pool water must be treated for copper. But, scientifically speaking water hardness is related to the excessive presence of certain elements like Calcium and Magnesium in water.   It is a common problem if the PH level of water is on the higher side of alkalinity. It is basically dependent on the area you live in.

Accepted levels of water hardness for different pool types

The people who have swimming pools or wish to own one must take care that pools must have water with hardness levels between 200 and 400 ppm.

A plaster pool is easily affected by even lower levels of water hardness so they must be filled with water with 180-220 ppm hardness.  Same is the case with vinyl pools which can accommodate 150-250 ppm hardness in water.

How to Measure Hardness of Pool Water

The hardness of the pool water is a very common problem and I frequently get complaints from my friends and others who trust me for the health of their pools. Well after many years of experience and different views about controlling pool hardness I am listing down the easy and cost effective methods that you can follow.

But before jumping on to these methods you must know about the health of your pool. The check on the hardness can be done easily with a dip test. For that, you need a hardness test kit. All you need to do is dip the test strip about 18 inches deep from the water level. If you are not too sure about the right depth then read the instructions given on the kit and do as suggested by the manufacturer.

Now you can take out the test strip and let it settle for a few minutes. It will take a while that the test strip to change to the exact color for reading the hardness level as indicated in the enclosed comparison indicator. Match the color of the strip to the exact color on the test strip. You need not worry if the result is anything between 200 and 400 ppm. But if you have a reading above this range then chose any method mentioned in the next segment to get back your healthy pool.

Methods to Reduce Hardness of Pool Water

    Replacement Method

The first method I am describing is the simplest. All you need to do is take out some amount of hard water from your pool and replace it with the softened water to balance the hardness of remaining pool water.

This process can be done every year to keep the pool in good shape. Using your pool’s drain equipment you have to drain out about one-third of the water.  The drained water can be diverted to your plants or kitchen garden to minimize water wastage. Once the desired quantity of hard pool water is drained you have to add the soft water. The source can be any. You can get the water from the home softening system or can hire a water supply carrier to supply treated water from other location.

Many cities have some kind of local pool supply professional services in the areas where hard water is a critical problem. Such a supply is a very easy and convenient method of reducing the hardness of pool water since you don’t need to wait any longer. As soon as the softened water supplier takes out the hose you are ready to jump in and enjoy the splashing moments in your pool again.

    Adding Softening Agents Available Commercially

If you don’t have a home softening system or a softened water supply company in your region you are left with the second method of reducing the hardness of pool water. You have to buy a commercially available hardness reducer and add it to your pool water.

Different softening agents have their own specific manufacturer instruction to be followed while using. You need to read these instructions very carefully and have to know about the pool and the level of hardness to achieve the required softness.

Also, make sure to use only the recommended amount of chemicals and use a clean plastic bucket to do all the mixing and stirring very carefully. Don’t add the whole solution at one spot in the pool. Instead, you have to add this solution slowly along all the edges or complete circumference of the pool.

Now is the time to mix the water and the added solution. This needs the services of your pool pump. You have to leave your pool pump on for one complete day. At the end of one day increase the pH level of water so that it stays between 7.8 and 8.2.

You can use borax or soda ash for this.  Check the hardness after a week and if it is at the desired level you have all the right to show that you have lost your patience and jump in the pool.

How To Clean Pool Filter Cartridge? A Step By Step Guide

How To Clean Pool Filter Cartridge

Earlier my wife used to complain that I hardly went out during weekend or off days. Now she complains that I am never around to help her with household chores. Well! She is right. Each weekend I am at one friend’s house, or another’s, doing what I do best – fixing their pool pumps. They call me if they have an issue with the pool. Just last weekend I guided my friend to replace pool pump motor instead of replacing the whole pump.

I have to tend to my friends, but I try to maintain peace at home, by taking my wife out on a movie and dinner date, every alternate Sunday. Last month, your “friendly neighborhood pool man” was busy cleaning pool filter cartridges at four different locations. Can anyone be more occupied than me!

Cleaning Pool Filter Cartridge With Bleach

Step 1 – Pick The Right Bleach For Cleaning

As I always say, it is better to have confidence in your skills. But a quick chat with the experts will offer small tips, which will make the task easy. I am not an expert in all matters, so, whenever I have any doubts, I rush to the supermarket. Mark and I drove to the mall to get the right bleach for the pool filters. I stood in front of the stands, wondering which one will serve my purpose best. Finally, I decided to shun my ego and asked the sale executive. With the right bleach filter cleaner in my possession, we headed back to Mark’s home.

Step 2 – Remove Loose Dirt

The filter mesh was dark as it has not been washed for a long time. I immediately gave mark an angry look, and he tried to handle the situation by running inside to bring two beers. It took the filters and started to tap them gently with a wooden spatula. The idea was to dislodge any loose dirt or debris.

Step 3 – Mixing Bleach And Water

Too much bleach can corrode the mesh, while too little bleach will not be able to dissolve dirt completely. Thus, I took a measuring cup to pour out the required amount I needed. As soon as I poured out the first cup of bleach, the strong stench drove me crazy. So, you better not make the same mistake, and take prior precautions. Once I had the adequate amount of bleach in the bucket, I added water to the potent liquid.

Step 4 – Immersing The Filters In The Mixture

The strong stench of the mix gave me the message that I was not to put my ungloved hands in the liquid. So, I put on a pair of gloves and immersed the filters in the bucket one by one. I made sure that the screens were not tightly packed, and had enough room for one another.

Step 5 – Leaving It Overnight

Once the filter cartridges were in the liquid, I covered the bucket slightly, and set it at one corner of the garage. I asked Mark to make sure that his kids don’t touch or disturb the liquid. The bleach worked on the filter cartridges and loosened the dirt.

Step 6 – Washing Out The Dirt

The next morning, I went back to Mark’s house. As soon as I took the lid off, the clear liquid had turned dark. It was due to the leaching out of the dirt from the filter mesh. I took out each cartridge and used a forceful hose to wash out each speck of dirt with warm water.

Step 7 – Dry And Place The Filter Cartridges

I placed the cartridges out in the sun to dry for few hours. In the meantime, I enjoyed a delicious spread that Mark’s wife had prepared for us. Though I don’t charge any money for fixing their pools, I get what I would otherwise not have been able to acquire – quality time with my old pals. When the filters were bone dry, I gave them a final tap and then fitted them back in the filter.

Cleaning Pool Filter Cartridge With Muriatic Acid

Step 1 – Arrange The Necessary Things

It was time for me to tackle the filter cleaning task at John’s home. He has one of those giant pool pumps, which have slightly tall filters. With John’s filters, I thought of trying the acid and bleach method. So, I took a quick trip to the store and picked up a big barrel of muriatic acid, pH neutralizer, a bottle of bleach, gloves, masks, and goggles for our eyes. I had already asked John to arrange a trash bucket that is tall and big enough to hold all the filters.

Step 2 – Primary Washing The Filters

When we opened the pump and took out the filters, I decided to use a strong jet of water to give it a quick wash. Then we put on our masks, goggles, and gloves to avert any unwanted situations as muriatic acid is very strong. John filled the trash bucket with water, and I poured the required amount of muriatic acid. It is better to use an acid to water ration of 4:1. As soon as I finished pouring the acid into the water, I saw and smelled acid fumes.

Step 3 – Immersing The Cartridges

Once the fumes had subsided, we lowered each cartridge into the trash bucket. The acid water mixture takes around 10 minutes to work its magic on the dirk. Once ten minutes were over, we flipped the cartridges for another 10 minutes.

Step 4 – The Final Wash

After 20 minutes were over, we brought out the cartridges, poured some pH neutralizer on them, and gave each a nice wash with warm water. The water jet was powerful, and we were able to clean the cartridges easily.

Step 5 – Fit The Dry Cartridges

The cartridges were left out in the sun for few hours, and the heat dried them. Then we placed these back in the pool filter and gave it a test run to see whether it was working or not. With each success under my belt, I was taking a step closer to perfection.

Cleaning Pool Filter Cartridge With Solution

Step 1 – Pick The Right Filter Cleaner

There are several kinds of pool pumps, and each has a different filter type. Jerry had installed a pump with sand filters. I had an idea that these filters are huge, and cannot be detached. So, I decided to use a filter cleaner for Jerry’s machine. My experience tells that it is the easiest way to clean pool filter cartridges.

Step 2 – Getting Rid Of Water By Backwashing

Before we started the treatment process, I switched on the backwash mode of the pool pump to drain out every drop of water, contained in the filter. As the water drained out, we saw the dirty water flowing out. I tried to put a leash on my anger, yet could not stop myself from asking Jerry when was the last time he had his filter cartridges cleaned. As expected, he failed to give a decent reply.

Step 3 – Prepare For Treatment Procedure

After this, I asked Jerry to pour the entire bottle of the filter cleaner into the pump basket. Once he emptied the bottle, he put the lid on like an obedient student and kept staring at me. I felt like laughing but somehow prevented it. Then I turned the filter back on “filter mode” and switched it on so that the cleaning liquid can enter the actual filter compartment.

Step 4 – Give It Time To Work

Once the liquid was sucked it, I turned the knob to set the pump in backwash mode. Then I switched it off completely. The liquid required around one hour to dissolve the dirt. I left it for a few minutes more. Once the time was up, I turned it on and activated the backwash mode. Dark foam and froth gushed out of the pipe, proving that we had achieved our aim.

Step 5 – A Final Rise Is All It Needed

Once the backwash was done, I turned on the rinse mode for two minutes to clean the pipes as well. The final step was to switch the machine on to the filter mode once more to put things in place.

Cleaning Pool Filter Cartridge With Vinegar

Step 1 – White Vinegar For Filter Cartridge

Lastly, it was time I helped Pip with his pool. Pip had already told me that his pool water has a high level of calcium in it. It meant that his pool filter cartridge must have a high percentage of calcium build up as well. So, I picked up two tubs of white vinegar for the treatment. He had a pump that was similar to Mark’s. So, I knew I could easily detach and re-attach the parts.

Step 2 – Immersing The Cartridges In Vinegar

Pip knew that I was a very strict taskmaster, and he was also aware of the fact that he had not taken care of his pool, or the pool pump filter. To get into my good books, he had already dismantled the pump and removed the oil from the filter cartridges with a degreaser. So, when I reach his place, all I had to do was pour the white vinegar in a bucket, and immerse the filter cartridges in it.

Step 3 – Completion Of The Treatment

The wither vinegar took around 24 hours to dissolve the dense calcium deposits and dirt from the cartridges. So, I returned after a day to a bucket full of dark brown liquid. It was a sign that the trick had worked.

Step 4 – Final Rinse With Hot Water

Once the filter cartridges were out of the dirty fluid, it was time to hose out the remaining filth with a strong jet of hot water. I must say, Pip knew more than any of my other friends. I stood with a drink in my hands, while he did most of the cleaning. Once the cartridges were dry, we put them in place and turned on the pump filter.

I can sense that I am good at this poop pump related matters. Each project gave me the opportunity to learn something new. Each filter cartridge cleaning process is different from the other. Every method made me wiser. I came to know about the loopholes and ways to get the upper hand over them.

How Much Do Automatic Pool Covers Cost? – Check Out Now

    Automatic Pool Covers Cost

Hello friends! Your “friendly neighborhood pool man” is back again with loads of information, which will come in handy to extend the pool health. Remember we made a pool pump shed? Since then, I noticed that there had been a significant change in my wife’s behavior. She does not show any interest in the pool and its maintenance. She only enjoys the pool parties.

I guess all women leave the hard work for their men! Recently my wife has been asking me several questions about the pool, its maintenance, and how I can protect the water from dirt, leaves, and any other debris. I thought that my interest in pool maintenance has rubbed off on her. But suddenly I realized that it was not that simple.

One night I asked her whether she wanted anything or not. Then I came to know that my in-laws had installed an automatic pool cover recently. It was then that I understood the reason behind her interest in the pool. I don’t know what it is with women! If their mothers have it, then they want it as well.

I will give you another tip that will come in handy to keep peace at home. Listen to what your wife has to say. Even if you are not going to do it, just try to act a little and let her believe as if you are thinking hard about it. That way, everyone is happy.

Initiate a search for the perfect product

So, from the very next day, I started searching online for automatic pool covers. My logic was simple – even if I don’t install it immediately, the search will provide me with information that might come in handy during my next project. So, there I was, trading articles, and checking online shopping sites, which keep a good collection of automatic pool covers.

    Types of pool covers

I did not have any idea about the automatic pool covers. As a matter of fact, I did not know that anything like that exists. Then I tried to recollect whether I had seen anything of that sort while I was checking my in-law’s pool motor. I could not remember seeing anything like that. A sheet that can cover the entire pool must be of considerable size. It was during my search online that I realized that there are several kinds of pool covers.

The cost of the product will vary depending on the material of the cover, its dimensions, complexity of installation and automation. The automatic pool covers can be folded without much fuss with by flipping a switch. When you need to put on the cover switch the machine on, and see how the sheets unroll and shield the pool from anything that spoils the water and makes it unusable.

Trust me! You will not have to move a muscle.

Cost of the automatic pool cover

Though there are several kinds of automated pool covers available in the market, I must warn you beforehand that you need to start saving from today, if you desire to shield your pool with these modern covers. As for me, I am in no mood to shell out $ 20,000 just to make my wife happy. But i have selected my personal favorite pool covers. Please check the above table.

Yes! You heard me right. The average expenditure that any person will have to tolerate will range between $10,000 and $20,000. The cost of covering the pool with these automated sheets will depend directly on the size and shape of your pool. In case you have a small regular pool, you will have to spend comparatively less.

If the pool is large, then you will need more material to cover it. Some people have custom designed pools. Showing off your circular or oval pool is fun. But having a custom-made pool cover is no fun at all. It will need you to loosen your purse strings.

    Cost Of Related Accessories

In general, the pool covers start from as low as $ 1000. But they are basic ones, which require manual labor to set up and fold up. Many pool cover companies will try to reel you in with false promises. But if you trust me, I will suggest that you prepare for a significant investment. It is not only the pool cover that you will have to purchase.

There are many accessories, which are a must, in case you install an automatic pool cover. I checked that a spool of motorized pool cover reels come with a price tag of $1000 or maybe more. For added protection, experts will ask you to pot for safety covers as well. These will come at an additional cost of $ 1500 to $ 2500.

    Installation And Labor Cost

You don’t need to possess the expertise to install an automatic pool cover. If I were to install one right now, I would also be sitting with the handbook in my hands and a dazed look on my face. All my research has given me more than enough reasons to believe that it is not my cup of tea. At least, I will require some assistance to finish this teacup. To install the pool covers, you will require the assistance of experienced mechanics. Apart from them, you will have to hire construction workers, who will dig a trench, where the automatic cover reel will sit. So, you will have to spend additional $400 to $600 for these services.

All these reasons, plus the high costs have strengthened my resolve against the installation of the automated pool cover. Now comes the hardest part. I will have to convince my wife to let go of this wish. And oh boy is she a tough nut to crack. If you have any bright ideas, which can save your friendly neighborhood pool man’s life, do send them in as soon as possible.

Replace Pool Pump Motor or Whole Pump Itself – Find Out

Replace Pool Pump Motor or Whole Pump

Sometimes I wish my grandpa was here to see that his dear grandson had managed to make a new identity for himself, even without a degree in electrical engineering. I must admit that whatever I know about wires, circuits, and repairing gadgets would not have been possible without his help.

My grandfather was a competent electrical expert, and deep down, he wanted me to follow his footsteps. But he never forced his decision on me or either of his grand children for that matter. So, when I told him that finance is what I want to have my career in, he encouraged me in every possible manner.

I still remember the days when I used to visit my grandparents’ home during summer and winter vacations. We had only two tasks. The first was to eat amazing dishes that my grandma used to cook, and the second was to watch my grandpa with his tools, working in his workshop and doing all the small and big chores of his home.

It was here that I held a screwdriver for the first time. Of the two brothers, I had an extreme interest in these things. So, my grand old man was too happy to take me in as an apprentice. It was his training that increased my interest in these matters. I had no idea that his teaching will come in handy after so many years.

Replace or purchase: Which is a better option

Here, I will not talk about any repair work that I had accomplished in the recent times. I will share my thoughts and experience with pool pumps and its motors, which, if not maintained properly, can give you a sleepless night. Not to forget that their repair will burn a hole in your pocket. As I am not a certified expert, I have learned from my personal experience. Last week I went to visit my in-laws home. They too have a pool, and as a normal pool owning family, they too were having problems with it. I teased my wife by saying that her parents invited me so that they can save the cost of repair specialist.

The First Look Says It All

As soon as I looked at the pool pump, I was sure that my father-in-law takes good care of the pump, at least the exterior parts. I guess the older generation understands that if you maintain a machine, it will give better results. We have a thing or two to learn from them. Last time we built a pump shed and it was just new, and the outer surface was dirt free. There were no signs of any damage.

Enquire About The Age Of The Pump

It is an essential factor that will play a pivotal role in deciding whether to change only the motor or to opt for a new pool pump. If the age of the pool pump is more than ten years, then the chances are high that you need to replace the entire pump set, provided all the parts have issues. If the pump is relatively new, but still it does not run smoothly or does not filter water well, then it is time to consider replacing the motor.

    Finding The Right Parts

Each pool pump has different motors and parts. With the advent of new pool pumps, some older models are no longer manufactured. According to me, if the pool pump motor you require is not available in the market, then it is better to change the entire pump. If you fail to get the motor from the spare part market, then the chances are high that the other parts are also not available. Search the regular stores and online portals before taking the final decision.

The pool pump that my in-laws have is only six years old. Still, it was creating a lot of noise. The filter was also not doing its job a well. I asked my father-in-law about the last time he cleaned his pool pump filters. Thanks to my experience with pool filters, I was able to fix the filter issues in a jiffy. It meant that once I fixed the motor, the pump will be as good as new.

    Analyzing the cost of repairs

If you ask me, you should only consider replacing the pump motor or any other part if the entire replacement cost will be less than 75% of the total price of the pump. I will never repair my pump if the restoration costs are too high. I can use the money to install a new pump. So, I took a quick look at the motor model and searched the online stores. The price was well within $800.

My mother-in-law had already slipped in the message that she was only ready to shell out $800 on the motor. I had a fair idea about the repairman they had in mind. Frankly speaking, I want to lead a peaceful life. If I had declined to offer my assistance, my wife would have driven me out of my own home. I believe in the saying “happy wife…happy life!”

All these points will assist you to make the final decision – whether it is better to replace the motor or to get a new pool pump. It primarily depends on the problem. If a quick motor replacement fixes the issue, then you need not worry about installing a new pool pump. But if the pool pump requires a number of changes, then it is better to contact a specialist who can install a new machine.

If you do not have any issues with screwdrivers, wires, and do not mind putting in some elbow grease, then you can do it yourself. Just read some step by step guides online or follow the handbook that comes with the pool pump. If you still have any doubts, you can get in touch with your “friendly neighborhood pool man.” I don’t mind dropping by for a few minutes. LOL!!

Sand Replacement In Pool Pump Filter

Last month, my younger brother invited my entire family to spend the weekend in his beautiful house. My kids just finished their examinations a few days back, and so, we happily accepted the invitation. It was long since we siblings spent some time together and it was just the right time and opportunity.

It was fun to catch up. After some long awaited chatting and gossiping, we went to bed. I don’t remember the exact time, but I woke up when my brother started banging on my door. When I came out, he told me that the pump pool was not working.

That was an issue as he has invited us for the weekend for a barbeque and pool party. His face was pale as he did not know what to do. Thankfully this revered “pool pump expert” was there at his service.

    Frequency of changing filter sand

As soon as I took a look at the pool water, I knew that his pump was fine. I asked him when he last changed his pump filter sand. His look answered everything. He later told me that he had no idea that one needs to change the sand. Wait! Even you don’t know that? I hope you read this article before you face a similar situation.

An average pool pump filter keeps the water clean from dirt. The water passes through the sand, and all the dirt gets trapped. One needs to change this sand after every 3 to 4 years. If you fail to do this, the already saturated sand will no longer be able to filter the water.

I recently moved into my new home and installed a new pump. So, when my brother asked me to help him with changing the filter sand, I got an opportunity to learn the tricks to accomplish the task.

Steps to Replace Sand in the Pool Pump Filter

We followed these steps to resolve the issue in hand. You can also try.

Step 1 – Remove The Old Sand

Firstly, we opened the pool pump cover to see the actual pump body. Then my brother unscrewed the filter compartment. It is common for the filter sand to contain bacteria, along with other kinds of dirt. To minimize the chances of infection, we used a small shovel to scoop out the sand. I soon realized that it would take much time. My brother brought out his trusted shop vacuum to suck up even the last speck of sand.

Step 2 – Pour Water Into The Filter Tank

Before we put the new batch of sand in the filter, I told my brother to pour some water in the tank. When I was consulting the manual, I learned that pouring some water helps to lessen the impact of dropping sand. Pouring in sand directly may damage the filter base.

Step 3 – Pick The Right Sand Quality

Some online consultation also told me that a lot depends on the selection of sand. #20 silica sand is one that manufacturers make for pool pump filters. The size of each grain is 40-50mm in its diameter. My brother has no idea about the type sand that goes in the pumps. If it were not for me, he would have picked the wrong sand, and destroyed the pool.

Step 4 – Pour The Sand In The Filter

Each pool pump filter is different, and each requires a certain amount of sand for optimum functioning. I measured the amount of sand before filling the filter, as I did not want to take any chances. If the amount of sand is less or more, then it can interfere with the filters’ operations, or damage it.

Step 5 – Close The Sand Pipe

We used wide tapes to close the opening of the sand pipe. It is mandatory to prevent any sand grains from getting into this pipe.  Taping the opening of this pipe helped in this. I knew that one should keep the pipe at the center. But it was not possible for me to do so alone. So, I asked my brother to hold the pipe, while I poured the sand around it. Any shift in the position of this pipe will hinder the process of putting the valve on.

Step 6 – Put On The Filter Cover

After the filter was full, I asked my brother to bring the filter head to put it in place. I took care to turn it slowly so that it does not become too tight. If you make it too snug, then there are chances that the body of the filter will crack.

Step 7 – Backwash The Pool Pump Filter

Once everything was in place, I asked my brother to turn on the power. But that was to backwash the filter. For this, we made sure that the pool had more water than its usual capacity. Then my brother started the backwash and let it run for around 5 minutes. Once the process was over, I asked him to start the rinse cycle for 60 seconds. Then the pool pump filter was ready for the actual process.

Cost Of Changing The Filter Sand

Apart from purchasing the pool pump filter sand, you will have to shell out around $100 to $200 for hiring an expert who would replace the sand in your pump filter. Before I rolled up my sleeves and stated work on the sand replacement, my brother has already called the specialists.

As soon as he heard the labor cost, he was in dilemma about spending so much in such an emergency. Thanks to my presence of mind, and acquired skills, my miserable kid brother was able to save a significant amount. But most importantly, I was able to save his face in front of his buddies coming over the next week.

For my services, he paid me with a tight hug, a big thanks, and extra bottle of my favorite beer. After all, that is what family does right?! They look out for each other.

How To Get Copper Out Of Pool Water?

By now, you must know that I have acquired tons of experience with the pool and pool pumps. Thanks to the frequent common problems with my pool to enhance my learning curve regarding DIY on swimming pools.

According to my wife, I need not worry about getting fired from office, as I already have a lucrative alternative. I did not give it much thought in the beginning. But later, I realized that she has a point. All my neighbors consult me if they have pool or pool pump related issues.

Remember how I fixed my brother’s pump filter?  Well, it seems that he was too eager to tell the story to his buddies. Even they started calling me up to discuss their problems. They refer to me as “friendly neighborhood pool man.” Even I am shocked to discover that I had it within me.

I think I need to charge them for my services from now on. What do you think? I will definitely not charge anything from you. Today, I will discuss the issue of copper in pool water and reducing it.

Having a pool is the easy part. Now that I have one, I realize why some of my buddies advised me to purchase a house without one. A home without a pool would have saved a few thousand bucks. But that was the secondary matter. Now I understand that you need to invest time, and elbow-grease to keep the pool and the pump in top shape.

It was a pleasant spring day when I was chatting with my wife when my son walked in. There was a strange greenish tint in his hair. Both my wife and I started to laugh. I thought his friends played a prank on him and poured color on his head. But he said that was not the case.

My wife told me that he went to the neighbor’s place for a pool party. Immediately I understood that it was no color, but something far serious. I called my neighbor and went to his place.

How does copper get into pool water?

As soon as I went near my neighbor’s pool, I was sure that the level of copper was way higher than normal. I also saw copper staining on the walls and the bottom surface of the pool. My neighbor did not have any idea about copper level in pool water. He thought whether it was dirt or something that was wrong with the filter. I was quick to point it that it was neither.

The pH level of pool water was high, and this caused copper saturation. Due to the presence of high copper content, the water was also dull and cloudy. As expected, the question was thrown at me “will you help me out of this mess bro?” I got yet another opportunity to display my pool fixing skills.

Step 1 – Test The Water For Copper And PH

Before starting the actual process, it was necessary to do some tests on the pool water. No need to raise your eyebrows! These are simple tests, and the kits are easily available in the market. I collected a small water sample it tested positive for copper concentration. An ideal pH must be between 7.2 and 7.3.

Step 2 – Correct The PH Balance Of The Water

The pH reading of my neighbor’s pool water was above 7.8. So, it was time to fix the pH level. With some online search and a quick consultation with the experts, I came to know that muriatic acid was the best solution for this. As the water alkalinity was so high, I used 1.5 ounces of the acid for 1,000 gallons water. In case the pH is between 7.6 and 7.8, 1.25 ounces per 100o gallons will be enough.

On the flip side, soda ash can also come in handy to decrease the acidity of the pool water. 0.75 ounces of soda ash in 1000 gallons will work if the pH is between 7.0 and 7.2. If lower than that, then using 1.25 ounces will be useful.

Step 3 – Checking The Pool Water Heater

Sometimes the copper leaching may be due to the water heater. But as I checked the heater, I was convinced that it was not the cause of the issue.

Step 4 – Backwashing The Water

Once the pH level was restored, I turned on the filter to backwash the water in the pool. After around 5 minutes, I turned it off and allowed it to rise for 40 to 60 seconds. I must confess that I did falter at some steps, but thanks to the ignorance of my neighbor; he was unable to realize it.

Step 5 – Adding Pool Magnet

As the name suggests, it has the power to attract all copper particles towards itself. I added the pool magnet as waited for the prescribed time. The best thing about the pool magnet is, you need not change it each week. An application will keep you sorted for a month or so. I added pool magnet as it allowed the copper to get trapped in the pool filter.

Step 6 – Adding The Filter Aid

After around an hour, I poured Kwik as per requirement. It is a common pump filter aid. Its addition will form a layer on the filter sand. It will, in turn, assist in trapping the copper particles effectively.

Step 7 – Removing The Copper From The Filter

The filter aid requires one full day to work its magic. So, I returned the next day and turned on the pump’s backwash function. Once it was done, it cleared the metal from the filter. Backwashing for 40 minutes was enough, and it required sensing the time of 40 seconds.

Step 8 – Testing Water Sample

After this, I used the home kit to test the copper level in water once again. My neighbor was surprised to see that the treatment method was successful in the first attempt. The copper level dropped below 1ppm, and the water was also crystal clear as it should have been.

    Finally

When my neighbor talked about my successful attempt, many were not sure how I managed to lower the copper level in the very first attempt. I did not take any extra credit and said that it was only possible as the copper concentration was not too high, to begin with. So, there I was, basking in glory, at another successful pool repair project.

How To Build A Pool Pump Shed?

Frankly speaking, I had no idea what a pool pump shed was. As a young boy, I had the luxury of jumping into the crystal clear water of the river, with my gang that flowed near my house. I grew up in the serene countryside. It was only when I moved to the fringes of the city that I realized that space was such a big concern.

I moved in with my family in one of those areas where the main street is lined with similar looking homes. Each came with a small pool at the back, but there was no pool pump. My realtor told me that I had to get it installed on my own, which I did. But the plumber refused to build a shed for the pump. So, I rolled up my sleeves and took the task into my own hands.

Thanks to my countryside upbringing, I was rather good with wooden planks, hammer, nails and measuring tapes. Trust me, pals! If I can do it, you can do it too! Here, I will explain the steps in a simple format. Follow them, and you will discover that you too have this hidden talent in you.

Important tools that you will require

You can make the pool pump from natural timber or any artificial material that is readily available in the market. These sheds are mainly located outside the house. Some place it in the garage, but personally, I think it takes up too much area that could be utilized otherwise. Mine is tucked neatly behind the bushes.

It is a ludicrous idea to expose the pump to natural elements. Thus, before you start the task, make sure that you have these tools at your disposal- natural or artificial ply, hammer, measuring tape, paint and brush, nails, sealer, and a saw.

Step 1 – Perfect Measurements For The Flawless Shed

I did not take the trouble of cutting the ply on my own. Sawing wood takes me back several years when I had a rather nasty experience with this sharp object called saw. Plus, asking the plank dealer to do it for me makes the task quicker. So, I took my measuring tape and noted down the exact length, height and width of the machine. I asked the dealer to leave the ply around 5 inches bigger. That will provide some room into the shed.

Step 2 – Mark And Paint The Planks

Once I got the ply, cut to perfection, and delivered to my doorsteps, I marked them accordingly. I had an impression of the shed in mind, and so, it did not take me long to figure out the way each plank was to be placed. As my planks were bare, I used a basic waterproof paint and evenly coated each ply. It enhances the look as well as the durability of the shed.

Step 3 – Construct The Frame Of Pump Cover

When the paint dried, I started work on the structure of the cover. The erection of the frame is rather easy. I made the hollow shell with 12 narrow planks, to meet the length, width and height measurements. To fix the joints, I used nails and bugle screws. In front, I attached a hinge as I wanted to make a door for this shed. After completing the box frame, I made a structure to cover the top part of the shed. I picked a hut style roof, but you can keep it simple as well.

Step 4 – Covering The Shed

Though I had some knowledge of carpentry, once I embarked on the self-made pool pump cover, I realized that expert guidance was needed to tackle some issues. While I fitted the broader planks on the framework, I saw that the planks were not fitting correctly. After consulting with a professional carpenter, I learned that it can be done by trimming and rounding off the edges. I placed the planks one after another and secured them with nails. I used long nails so that it can penetrate the frame as well as the plants. You can use a wood sealer if you wish. Once all the planks were in place, the shed was almost complete.

Step 5 – Allow Passage Of Heat

When the pool pumps run, its motor causes enough heat. It is mandatory to allow vents, through which the heat will pass. For this, I cut a small square hole at the back, exactly where the motor will be aligned. I was feeling a bit a lazy, and that is why I bought a readymade vent cover. The gaps allowed heat to escape while keeping out leaves, twigs, rain, and snow.

Step 6 – Adding The Door

Remember the hinge joint that I added to the front portion of the door? By now you must have realized that my pool pump shed has a traditional style door with a knob. To make the door functional, I attached one of its sides to the hinge and secured it with smaller nails. The nail drill was very handy. My brother has a slide-up door. If you have any better options, feel free to try them out. The main reason behind this door is if the need arises, the mechanic can take a look at the pump, or take it out as well.

Step 7 – Attaching The Roof

Asbestos is a popular choice when it comes to making small shed roofs. They are bad conductors of heat, durable and repel water. As I had invested in the new home recently, I choose to give it a miss. Instead, I used the ply as the roofing material. When I attached the roof on the box, the pump cover looked like a small hut.

    My Experience

I took the help of my friend to place it on the pump. My youngest daughter was rather pleased to see a separate hut for the pool pump. In fact, she was so impressed that she asked me to make a dollhouse for her. I am currently working on this super-important project. Once I finish it, I will tell you how you can bring a smile on your princess’s face with a dollhouse.

How To Soundproof Outdoor Pool Pump?

    Soundproof Outdoor Pool Pump

Now days I hardly come across a middle-class home that does not have a pool in the backyard. People, who cannot afford a constructed pool, purchase the portable pools, which are easy to assemble. My last home did not have a pool. So, my kids used to roam around in the house with long faces during the summers.

I was in no mood to spend a good amount of bucks on purchasing a portable pool. I knew that we are not going to stay in the small house for long, but still, I wanted to fulfill the most cherished dream of my kids. I still remember the joyous expression on my kids’ faces when they saw the beautiful pool. Even my pet Labrador did not wait a moment more and jumped into it.

Having a pool is the easy part. It is the maintenance of the pool that creates issues. When you have a pool, you need a pool pump to fill in and drain out water. It was this pump that made my life a living hell. When I turned on the pump, I was happy to see that water was gushing into the pool. But the irritating sound it made was too much to tolerate.

At first, I did not do anything about it, but when my neighbors started complaining, I had to take a decision about handling this problem. The best way to eliminate noise from pool pumps is by insulating and soundproofing the pump shed.

Kind of Pool Pump Noise you may face

Before I tell you how to I reduced pool pump noise, you need to know about a thing, or two about the nature of noise pool pumps produce.

    • The first is the operational noise. It is produced when the motor of the pump is switched on. There is not much that you can do to prevent it. However, pool pump manufacturing companies have several models, which come with noise-cancellation gear, built in the pump.
    • The second noise that causes irritation is the humming vibration sound. The pump needs to be placed on some surface. As soon as you place the pump on the ground, and switch it on, it will create vibration in addition to its operational noise. It gives rise to this annoying purring noise.

Steps to soundproof outdoor pool pump

This is how I took up the task to eliminate this problem once and for all.

Step 1 – Acquiring the necessary materials

The material list required for this task depends on the type of pool pump you own. Mine is an ordinary pool pump, and it has a cover that I made myself. I purchased a few silicon mats, acoustic foam padding, nails, and fast fix glue from Amazon. My pool pump is rather large in shape. Thus, I decided to strike off rubber suction footers. If you have a small pump, you can use these footers.

Step 2 – Placing the silicone mats

When you place the pump on the floor and turn the power on, it will vibrate. This vibration causes the noise. If the pump is placed within an enclosed box, without any insulation, the sound will be multiplied. As I was unaware of this issue and had already installed the cover, I had to take it off, part by part.

Once I removed it, I placed three silicon pads under the pump. These pads helped in absorbing a significant amount of vibration, thereby reducing the noise. But it did not solve the problem completely. You must choose silicon pads in several sizes.

Step 3 – Attaching foam inside the cover

I bought acoustic foam to line the inner surface of the pump cover. The foam lining I purchased was comparatively thick. Thus, one layer of insulation was enough to cut out the noise. If you purchase thin insulation foam, then you must place two or three layers, one on top of the other. To fix several layers, you can use super fix glue. I used thick foam pads and fixed these on the inner surface of pump shed with super glue.

Step 4 – Assemble the shed again

Once I lined all sides with the thick foam insulation pads, I assembled it again. Before that, I ensured that the glue should not come off due to the heat. So, I drilled nails to fix the pads permanently. I made sure to cut out a section of the insulating foam, to allow unhindered air flow. Without this, the inner part of the box would become excessively hot when a pump is operating.

    Installing expensive soundproof boxes/Covers

If you are not in a mood to put in hard labor and have enough money to spare, then opting for metal soundproof boxes, which are readily available in the market is a timesaving idea. Though these are made of metal, they are so well insulated from within that you will not hear any vibration.

I realized that it is not wise to spend so much, when I can get the same results, for a fraction of its cost. It took me only two weekends to get everything done.

    Finally..

I was 100% sure that my soundproofing workaround would work. When I switched on the motor, I had my fingers crossed. To my and everyone else’s delight, the previously intolerable noises were totally muffled. Then I took around 20 steps away from the pump shed, the sound was almost inaudible.

I no longer get complaints from my neighbors and we spend weekends together around the pool. More than socializing, I get a lot of appreciation for my handiwork with pump shed soundproofing.

How To Get Air Out Of Sand Filter

How To Get Air Out Of Sand Filter

I love swimming! And I will be really surprised if someone says that he doesn’t. I eagerly wait for the weekends when I could rinse away the week’s stress and strain of meeting the deadlines with a splash in my pool. My adorable five years old doll is a great company in the pool.

All was going well till last Sunday when I saw that the pool water is looking a bit cloudy. I thought the dusty winds are the culprit.

I started the sand filter and waited for the water to clear. But it was same after the two hour long process. So I decided to check the sand pump which I installed two years back. I immediately realized that the air in my sand filter is the reason.

So next few hours went away in locating the manual of sand filter and understand how to overcome this issue. I went ahead with the suggestions given, but it took me one whole day to crack the problem and get my sparkling pool back.

Of course, I couldn’t enjoy the weekend the way I expected but the next weekend was merrier than ever. I was proud of myself for DIY experience with my sand filter. I would love to share my experience with all of you.

Why does air get into the sand filter?

After this episode, I can say that the ignorance and overlooking minor issues can lead to a major problem with your sand filter. Here are some of the reasons that air will enter and stay in the filter.

    • Inappropriate Water Level is one of the most common reasons for this problem. The problem occurs when the water level is very low and the skimmer gulps air along with water. Ensure that water level is maintained above half of the skimmer opening.
    • Gap or Crack in the area around Pump lid can also be a reason for air in the sand filter pump.  You must check the pump lid and the section of the pump just below lid for any cracks or openings.  An overstretched o-ring (due to heating or overuse) can be a reason behind the air entering the filter.
    • Loose Plumbing is also counted as another common reason for the excessive air in the sand filter.
    • Cracks in Skimmer can appear as time passes. This happens when the floor or surface above the skimmer settles with time and produces some gaps that may put pressure on the skimmer and it gets cracked.

7 Steps to get air out of Sand Filter

Now that you are aware of the reasons for the entry of air into your sand filter, you are ready to handle this problem on your own. All you need is a jar of petroleum jelly and that’s it. Follow these steps

    Step 1

Turn off the power supply of your sand filter. As another level of safety pull out the power plug so that you are safe from any accidental electric shock.

    Step 2

Next, you have to open the air relief valve. It is located on the top of the sand filter canister and you have to rotate it anticlockwise to open it. After this, you have to open the skimmer valves. After opening the skimmer valves, open the main drain valve and leave it like that for the next step.

    Step 3

Now you are ready to check the condition of the pool strainer. Unfasten the pool pump strainer box cover. For this, you have to open the two knobs present diagonally to each other. Clean the pump strainer basket properly to remove all the collected debris. The pump basket present in the strainer must not be empty. If it is empty then using a bucket or a water hose you must fill the strainer with water.

    Step 4

Once you fill the strainer with water, complete the inspection of these components for any cracks or cuts. If its gasket is cracked and hugely damaged you must replace it.  But if the cracks are minor apply the petroleum jelly on the gasket, place it back on the strainer with care so that no gaps are there. Close the strainer with strainer lid and secure the knobs by applying tigtly with your hands.

    Step 5

Next, you have to focus on the diverter valve. It must be set to the pool return setting or to filter setting if your sand filter has a multiport system. When you do this the water will start filling up the pool. This is an important step because if you don’t open the pool return valve, you have the chances of increasing in water pressure when the sand filter starts operating. This strain may damage the pumping system beyond repair. In that case, you have to spend your money on getting a new pump.

    Step 6

You have done everything to remove air from the sand filter. Now plug in the power cord and switch on the filter. Carefully and slowly release the skimmer valve and observe the rising bubbles. As you have plugged all cracks or opening the discharging bubbles indicate that the air is removed from the filter into the pool.

    Step 7

In the last stage of this process check that the air relief valve present on the top of the filter canister releases air with a sound while the water is being filled in the filter system. When the relief valve allows water to move out you have to close this valve by rotating it clockwise. Now you can start the pool heating system.

    Final Words

Here I have listed down all the steps I followed to remove air from my sand filter. My experience tells me that you will also get all the needed help from this article If you want to give it a try before fetching help of a professional.

Do mention your experience in the comments box. If you have faced this problem and have solved it then I would love to learn a different solution. I would love to try this next time it happens.

I hope that never happens again! God Bless.

How To Perform Pool Deck Repair?

    Pool Deck Repair

Are you apprehensive that everybody has already entered your pool? Are you uneasy because you are scared that everybody will notice that worn out, cracked and ugly stained pool deck of yours? As long as the concrete is structurally strong, you will have numerous options to repair your pool deck and save your pool from being an eyesore.

Based on the factors like strength and condition of the concrete, your budget and time limit, a pool deck repair work ranges from a simple color augmentation with a single or multiple coats to total resurfacing that includes comprehensive embellished overlay.

You need to first inspect what caused the damage before you start implementing repair work so that you can directly work on the root cause. This way, you can choose and plan the best repair procedure from the many available options.

Generally, repair works include filling the cracks, rework on slope structure so that water doesn’t settle in unnecessary places, include water diverting structure to allow standing water to runoff, relevel the whole surface, hide the stains with a coat of attractive color and decorate complete overlay.

When should you repair pool deck?

Pool decks plays a very important role in attracting swimmers. The more decorative it is, the more pleasant would it be to the swimmer’s eyesight. It is all a mind game and the outlook itself gives a relaxation to the swimmer’s mind. Even if you maintain chemical balance in your pool, keep it away from flies, and see to it that the pool is very hygienic, you will still need to work on pool deck, as it is like a gateway for many swimmers to enter inside.

The more decorative it is, the more it appeals a swimmer’s mind. In this method, you will create a fresh surface to stain. It is an economical way to conceal flaws on the pool deck while making it decorative and eye appealing at the same time. In this method, you can use a texture that suits your requirement.

If you want a smooth finish, then you will need to apply two base coats manually and then trowel a third thin coat to achieve feathery smooth surface. Then you will stain the surface and finish with a urethane.

For a different finish, micro topping material should be sprayed and this creates a uniform rippled texture.

You can stain the finish to create a spotted look.

    How to do it?

    1. First, you should work on cracks by stitching and filling them with mortar.
    2. Then, install swale to perform corrections in drainage problem.
    3. Then perform micro topping repair on your pool deck with the best staining pattern.
    4. Use appropriate texture to enhance the pattern.
    5. You can decorate your pool deck border with brick patterns and stencil designs.

How to Perform Above Ground Pool Repair?

    Above Ground Pool Repair

We all know that it’s the pool walls that hold water. If you maintain your pool to be at a decent quality, then it can last between 20 to 30 years. After this period, the top rails start rusting. Sometimes, the uprights and pieces of bottom track will also start to rust. The pool walls that hold the pool waters get corroded. Because of this, the pool looks no more lively and will not please the swimmers.

Usually, it is when you change the liner that you will observe the rusty pool. This is because, when you change the liner, you will need to first drain the pool. And then, you will need to remove the liner. As soon as you remove it, the empty pool exposes the rusty and unpleasing walls. When you look at the rusty condition, you will surely ask yourself if this is normal or is it something that seriously needs to be fixed. Hence, you would want to get the pool into normal condition.

If you are really wanting to fix such issues, then this is the right place to guide you. Here, we will guide you how and when to perform advanced above ground pool repair.

How to confirm it needs repair?

Before you conclude that your pool needs a repair, you should first confirm if the discovered rust is just resting on the inside surface of pool walls or is it something more.

If it is just a surface rust, then it is not an issue that you should worry about. You can manage it with a sandpaper by sanding the rusty areas to turn into smooth surface and then following it up by Rust-Oleum. Then, your pool walls are good to go.

However, if you have found it to be more than just a surface rust, then it is something you need to be serious about. In certain cases, the rust gets so deep that it starts falling off in layers which means that the corrosion has gone quite deep. If this is the case, then you should doubt the strength of the pool walls. It is the pool walls that hold thousands of gallons of water and if they start getting weak, then they may lose strength then the wall may collapse.

To know how deep the walls are rusted, poke them with a screw driver and scrape off the rust. If you find that the screwdriver has just removed the rust, then it means that the wall still has strength. So, you still have chances to repair the wall. On the other hand, if the screwdriver pokes completely through the wall, then it means that the walls have lost their strength.

    Test if holes are bad

After you have poked the rusted walls with screwdriver and discovered few spots, you should now check whether they are located high up or closer to the pool’s wall. If they are far away from the wall then, you can cut a small square of some kind of metal sheet or a roofing tin and place it over the hole there by, securing it with a duct tape.

On the other hand, if the rusted hole is too near to the wall, then the issue is serious and probably requires more than a simple patch job. Such deeper holes should be deeply concerned because the water creates more outward pressure, blowing out almost near to the top. Hence, a simple patch job will not hold the taped metal sheet, thus blowing it out to the top. If it holds, then you can manage it for some more time till the situation worsens.

    When does the situation worsen?

When can you say that the situation has worsened? Let’s suppose that there is a lot of rust at the bottom of your pool wall. So much, that the walls are full of deep rusted holes and you really doubt the strength of the walls.

Then, you will be left out with only 3 options:

    1. Tape metal sheets

This method is for those who have already purchased a replacement liner and have no money for a new pool. This option does not guarantee any success and you have to just hope that all goes well.

Even if it is successful, you cannot guarantee that the solution will be long term. Any time in the short period ahead, the problem might reoccur.

If the patch repair has gone unsuccessful, you will be out of the cost of the new liner and may lose all the water along with the chemicals.

    1. Drain the pool.
    2. Remove the existing liner.
    3. Take a screwdriver and poke it all over the walls to find for holes.
    4. Cut small metal sheets to desired patches based on the holes sizes.
    5. Place the metal sheet pieces over the holes to cover them and secure them with a tape.

    2. Get a new wall

The next option is for those who do not want to take a chance of getting into losses. The idea is to build a whole new wall altogether.

For above ground pools, replacing a wall is not an easy task as the pool manufacturers do not show interest in offering models that are more than two years old. Every year, they come up with latest trendy models and the old models begin to shade off from the market.

However, we never know that if you get lucky enough, you might get the replacement wall that perfectly matches your pool. In such cases, you must be prepared to pay the expensive prices as you will be left with no other choice.

    3. Repair the wall

The third option is very rare and highly expensive. It is to repair the wall. This procedure is too costly because, there is a lot of work involved in it. You will need to remove the rust that is very deep, until the walls look good. You will need to remove all that the walls hold. This kind of repair is rarely done as very few people know how to do it.

    Guaranteed repair method

The only way to guarantee the success of a rusty wall repair is to strengthen the impaired wall’s integrity from the top to the bottom, and just not in the local bad rusty spots.

    1. Drain the pool
    2. Remove the liner
    3. Replace entire damaged above ground pool wall. This is not an easy task as you need to find for an entire piece in the market. Ensure that the wall piece is at least 4 inches long or more so that it covers all the bad areas of your pool wall.
    4. Bolt the new piece of wall to stay against your existing wall. Buy about 30 stainless flat head steel bolts and nuts, and four pieces of metal steel channel.
    5. Now, place the new wall that you bought from the pool makers and place it against the inside of existing wall. See that you position it to cover all the bad areas and fit properly against the existing wall from the top to the bottom.
    6. Line up the metal channels at the edge of the new wall piece and drill holes so that you can mount it.
    7. Bolt the channels with the nuts and bolts, through the drilled holes so that the new wall stays together above the existing wall. Ensure that you bolt it tight.
    8. Make use of a duct tape to clasp the bolts on the inside from the top to bottom, just like how you did with the pool’s existing wall bolts.
    9. As a final step, replace the coves at the bottom.

This is not an easy repair, but will be undoubtedly successful and will give you long term security. This method will not only give you guaranteed results but is also economical.

    Conclusion

An above ground pool repair is neither easy, not much economical. If the situation is just a surface rust, then you can manage it by sanding off the rust and thereby patching up the local holes that are not too deep. However, if the rust is so deep that you cannot handle, you will be left with no much options.

The repair works for damaged above ground pools are rarely done for rusted walls and in most cases, you will need to replace the wall piece, which is again a difficult task. If you get the perfect wall piece that matches the size of existing rusted wall, then you will need to position it against the existing damaged wall such that it covers all the damages and then bold it with flat bolts and nuts.

How To Perform A Pool Cover Repair?

    Pool Cover Repair

Does your swimming pool make use of a pool cover? Just like any other pool device gets into repair, so is the case with pool covers. Be it an in-ground pool cover or solar pool cover, you need to maintain them for longevity.

You cannot avoid the fact that the pool cover exposes to sun and pool chemicals continuously. Also, you need to apply physical force on the cover while covering and uncovering it over the pool. Hence, pool covers do get into repairs but the good news is that pool cover repair is economical to repair at home.

Vinyl pool covers, also referred to as solar pool covers are one of the best and durable models that help you to prevent heat and chemicals to escape from your pool. They help to minimize water evaporation.

However, with time you will experience wear and tear of the cover. Due to continuous exposure to sun, the pool cover gets discoloured. If a tear or hole occurs, the repairing can be done at home with simple tools and methods.

What factors define the repair success rate?

A pool cover needs a repair when it suffers tears, holes or discoloration. Most of the damages can be repaired successfully at home, and some need professional help. If the damage is big enough to be handled by professionals too, then you will need to replace it.

Usually, the success rate of repairing pool covers depend on certain factors like:

    1. Age Of Your Pool Cover
    2. Type Of Repair Materials
    3. Size Of Damage
    4. Repair Method You Choose

    Age of your pool cover

How old is your pool cover? Were you promised of any warranty when you bought it from the store? And, is it still under the warranty period? All these count for the frequency rate of repairs to your pool cover.

Usually, a pool cover lasts for 10 to 12 years or more if you maintain it regularly. If your pool cover is deteriorating due to negligence like ignoring cleanliness or due to ‘Act of God’ like natural calamities due to hot sun, heavy snowfall, falling of tree branches that causes punctures etc., the warranty doesn’t cover them.

However, if you later develop defects due to faulty manufacture or workmanship, you can contact the dealer from whom you bought the cover and claim for warranty. For this, you need to carefully preserve the purchase bill.

    Type of repair materials

The type of materials you use for repairing will play a crucial role for longevity of your pool cover. You should always think about long term safety rather than fixing the issue for short term solutions.

If you are patching up a tear or puncture with a sticky tape, take care that it is water resistant. You can choose polythene tapes that match with the material of pool covers. You can also try aluminium reinforced PE tapes that stick very well while being water proof. On the other hand, cloth tapes tend to hold moisture and hence avoid them.

Always prefer using safety cover patch kit. If the damage area is up to 8 inches long, you can manage with proper water proof sticky tapes. You can also use pieces of mesh or rubber cement to patch the damage areas. Once the repair is done, always wait until it dries completely before you start using it.

For net pool covers, you can use nylon straps to stitch the tears. If the tear is too big to join the pieces and stitch them together, you can use suitable mesh whose material matches with that of your pool cover, and patch then it up on the damage area. Then, stitch it up with nylon thread.

    Size of damage

Size of damage matters a lot for the longevity of your pool cover after you repair it. If it is a small rip or tear that is under 6 inch length, then the repair can be done easily. On the other hand, if the tear is too long and if there are lot of punctures, then repairing it might be an impossible task.

If your pool cover is in the hands of an experienced professional, then there may be a little chance of success rate. However, if the repair is too big to be handled even by a professional then, the only solution is to replace the pool cover.

    Repair method you choose

When you repair a pool cover, take care that you perform smart work so that there are less chances for damage to reoccur. Here are some of the tips for you:

    1. Always, ensure that you clean and dry the damage area before you start repairing it.
    2. Prefer to patch on both sides (above and below) of the damage for durability.
    3. Do not fix patches as they are. Cut their corners round or oval so that there are fewer chances for wear and tear of the patches.
    4. Once you fix a patch with a sticky tape of adhesive, place a heavy weight on the patch for at least 6 to 12 hours before you fold it.
    5. Whenever you fold the pool cover in the future, take care that you do not fold it near the patch. Ensure that it is always away from the folded areas.

Types of damage and repair method

    Repair a hole

You will get repair kits for pool covers in the market. These kits include a vinyl patch and a vinyl adhesive.

If you want to repair the hole in your pool cover, you can follow the instructions below:

    1. Carefully, remove the pool cover from the pool such that no more damages occur to it.
    2. Lay it on the plain ground surface.
    3. Since you have removed it from the pool, it must have been wet. So, dry the area where you want to apply the patch.
    4. Now, use the vinyl adhesive from the repair kit and apply it around the hole on your pool cover.
    5. Now, carefully press the vinyl patch over the area where you applied the adhesive.

    Repair a tear

Usually, the issue of tears occur with mesh or net model pool covers. These models are prone to tears and the repairs are quite simple if you know how to sew to attach two pieces together with a thread and a needle. It needs no rocket science. All you need to do is, bring the two torn pieces together, take a needle with an industrial strength nylon thread and start sewing them to stay together.

If the tear is too big to handle, you can patch it up with a net patch. Place the patch to cover the torn area and sew it up altogether with your hand.

If the tear is too big to be handled by a patch, then you are left with no other option, but to replace the entire pool cover with a new one.

    Repair Discoloration

You will have very less chances to fix the discoloration problem for pool covers.

Discoloration can mainly occur due to two reasons:

    • Exposure to sun
    • Exposure to chemical residues or mild dew

If the discoloration has occurred because of continuous exposure to sun, then you almost have nil chances to fix the problem. However, if it is due to chemical residues or mild dew, then you can follow the repair method below:

    1. Fill a plastic tub that holds at least 1 gallon water.
    2. Add 1 cup of bleach to the water.
    3. Now, lay the pool cover on a flat surface.
    4. Dip a rag in the bleach solution and rub off the mild dew and chemical residue on the cover.
    5. Allow the cover to dry before you place it back on the pool surface.

    Conclusion

Pool cover often tends to get into repairs due to many reasons that are not in our control. As a pool owner, you can maintain it to certain extent like cleaning the chemical residues, drying the pool covers whenever possible, seeing that you do not grow bigger trees near the pool so that you can avoid branches falling over it etc.

Things that are not in our control are the ‘Acts of God’ like continuous exposure to sun, heavy snow fall, mild dew, storm, broken trees etc. that cause discoloration, punctures, tears, etc.

Usually, when you bring a pool cover from a store, it comes with a warranty that covers only manufacture defects or stitching defects. If the repairs are due to ‘Act of God’, then the warranty doesn’t cover them. Usually, the warranty period would be around 10 to 12 years for most of the brands.

Follow proper repair tips and methods for fewer chances of pool cover repairs to reoccur in the future.

How Much Does Infinity Pool Cost?

    Infinity Pool Cost

Have you ever heard of a never ending pool? If you are adventurous, you would feel absolutely exciting to spend time in such pools. You would feel as if you are spending time in a bigger water body rather than a limited sized swimming pool. It is a different experience altogether!

An infinity pool is today’s latest emerging trend in pool industry. If you are adventurous, passionate about swimming, have a big back yard and have lot of money, then infinity pool might be the right choice for you.

These pools appear as if they do not have boundary walls. On one of its end, the boundary wall is very short and it is through this wall that the pool water spills over and falls into a basin installed beneath it. This collected water is pumped back into the pool through a special pumping system.

These pools are very attractive while being expensive. The maintenance charges are also very high for these pools. If you are planning to install one, then you can visit your local pool company who can guide you about infinity pool cost, and the benefits, negatives, and risks of installing it.

Infinity pool – the latest trend!

In today’s pool industry, one of the latest emerging luxurious trends of swimming pools is an infinity pool. As the name suggests, the construction is designed in such a way that it appears as if the pool has no boundaries. These pools are also referred as ‘Vanishing Edge Pools’ or ‘Negative edge pools’.

Usually, these types of pools give you a breath-taking experience if they are installed in areas where natural water bodies are very nearby. So, when you get into such pools, you will feel as if the waters of your pool are merging with the other water body. It gives an optical illusion to the swimmers, as if the water blends into the horizon, taking them to the next level of experience.

    Is it beneficial?

Personally, it is all about individual choice. If you are particular about installing an infinity pool, you can go for it. Except that it gives you a different experience because of the optical illusion and makes you feel that your pool has no boundaries, the rest of the swimming experience is always the same. Infinity pool is just a luxurious choice.

If you have installed it near a water body like a river or sea, it gives you breath-taking scenery as if your pool water is merging with the bigger water body. If you love being adventurous, or like to experience things in a different way, then you would love spending time in these pools.

    What makes it so expensive?

While these pools look attractive, it is very expensive to uphold the complete architecture.

The shorter wall of the pool from which the water spills needs to be regularly maintained to withstand the continuous flow of water, while being attractive.

    • The idea seems to be absolutely exciting but, the cost to install an infinity pool is not the same as that of the regular one. One of the main reasons that contribute to the cost is the power that is needed to run the pool. It consumes heavy power in order to operate the pool successfully.
    • The cost to install an infinity pool is comparatively very high perhaps because of the special basin being the other reason. It serves as the spill over catch and continually operates to regulate the flow of water.
    • The water that is collected in the special basin needs to be pumped back to the pool above. For this, you need to build a special system that continuously operates to push back the water before it overflows from the catch basin.
    • Another factor that contributes to the price is maintaining and continuously treating the short dam wall that separates the pool from the spill basin. You should ensure that the dam wall is waterproof as it needs to bear the continuous flow of pool water.

The above reasons contribute to the price of installing vanishing edge pools. The price of these factors will be deducted if you are planning to install a regular pool.

    Who can install it?

Swimming pools have been into existence since the ancient times. Infinity model pools have been the latest trend and hence, you need to search for an expert who has experience with similar projects in his past career. Though pool industry easily offers you many professionals to build a regular pool, it is not so easy to find one for an infinity pool.

Apart from the installation cost, labour charges, customized architectural design charges and the raw material costs, you need to pay a lot extra or pay a premium to get the appointment of an expertise that you specially prefer.

Since it is a risky project, all pool companies will not come forward to offer installation services. For these kinds of projects, you cannot take the risk of hiring a less expensive pool company as their work might not catch up your expectations.

    How about maintenance charges?

Once you install infinity pool in your backyard, the cost doesn’t end there. You need to continuously bear maintenance charges that are quite expensive.

Apart from regular maintenance that you do for regular pools like running filters regularly, chlorination, pH level balancing, removing metals, debris, taking measures to keep mosquitoes away etc., you will have extra maintenance to do for infinity pools. These include you to run an extra pumping system that pumps the water that spilled into the catch basin, back to the pool. Maintaining this system is very expensive and it requires a lot of power to run.

All these effectively impact the maintenance bill. Also, these pools are not compatible to using pool covers. Hence, you need to regularly work to remove the dirt and debris. Also, because of the absence of pool cover, the water tends to evaporate faster and this again contributes to adding extra maintenance charges because of power bill.

    What are the cons?

The primary prerequisites to install an infinity pool is that you will need a lot of money and a big back yard. Apart from this, you will have many negatives when installing such pools.

Let’s note some of them below:

    1. Infinity pools are not economical.
    2. These pools involve a lot of maintenance.
    3. Cannot use pool cover and hence water evaporates faster.
    4. The pool is prone to debris and dirt.
    5. Very less professionals who offer infinity pool services are available.
    6. Consumes lot of power to operate.
    7. Installation cost is very high.
    8. Maintenance cost is high.
    9. Repairing costs are high.
    10. Risk of somebody falling from the short wall into the spill basin is high. So if you are having kids, it is better to ignore these pools or else, you need to continuously help them spend time in the pool, under your supervision.

    Other Popular Articles

    Conclusion

Opting for an infinity pool is not an easy thing. You need to make a lot of background research and analyse if it suits your lifestyle. These pools are very attractive and when installed in areas that have beautiful nature as background, like hilly areas or rivers or sea, you will have a breath-taking experience. You will feel as if your pool merges with the other water body. Apart from this experience, rest of the swimming experience is the same.

If you love to be adventurous and want to take your swimming experience to the next level, then you can opt for infinity pools.

The biggest negative about installing an infinity pool is the proper place for installation, and money. You may also find it difficult to find a professional who has prior experience with infinity pool projects. Also, they are highly paid as the project involves lot of risk.

You will need to spend a lot down the road for its maintenance and the power to operate these pools is very high. Also, there is a risk that you may fall from the spill wall into the catch basin.

If the infinity pool cost and risks associated with it doesn’t bother you, then why wait? Just go ahead and get a thrilled swimming experience!

How Much Does Acid Wash Pool Cost?

How much does Acid Wash Pool Cost?

Are you worried that your pool is no more pleasing the swimmers? If your pool is not maintained to be hygienic, it will not attract anyone anymore. If you are thinking about acid wash pool cost, then it means that your pool is the highlight point at your outdoor space, being the centre of attraction for every social gathering.

A pool looks unpleasant due to many reasons. One of the reasons is because of the build-up of chemical deposits, algae, metals in water and the rust. All these stain the water, make them cloudy or muddy, seeming very unpleasant to the swimmers. Also, these unwanted build-ups will stain the surface and walls of the pool. An acid wash helps you to quickly remove those ugly stains and build-ups, giving you a shiny bright pool.

    What factors define the cost?

The cost of acid wash for a pool depends on factors like:

    1. Geographical location of your pool.
    2. Accessibility of your pool.
    3. Size of your pool.
    4. Time of the year.

If your pool measures about 500 square feet then, an acid wash might cost you about $175 to $250. The price includes the labour cost and necessary chemicals as well.

If you want to perform the wash on your own, then you will save labour charges and will need to spend only on chemicals that might cost you around $30. If you are performing the acid wash at home, then you will need a sump pump, and buy protective clothing.

When can you acid wash a pool?

Pool maintenance needs to be performed on a regular basis. When you plan to build a pool, all that reminds in your mind is the enjoyment you get by swimming.

On the other hand, you also need to think about regular maintenance. You need to continuously maintain chemical balance, pH level balance, clean the debris, filter water, prevent the build-up of algae, chemical deposits and stains.

You will often need to check the quality of your pool and do the needful whenever it is necessary. Most of the times, when the build-up of dirt is too deep, an acid wash can cleanse your pool. This requires you to drain the pool while performing acid wash.

Difference between Acid Washing and Pool Cleaning

Pool cleaning is a normal cleaning procedure that does not require you to drain the pool water.

    Usually, cleaning procedures include:

    1. Scrubbing off the sides and bottom of the pool with an iron or steel bristle brush.
    2. Cleaning the pool filter cartridges or replacing them if required.
    3. Removing the floating leaves and debris with a thin net.
    4. Checking the chemical levels and pH balance in the water and adjusting them whenever necessary.

Acid wash is different from normal pool cleaning in the way that it is required when the dirt is accumulated in layers on the pool bottom surface and side walls. It is the method to clean dirt that is deep and needs a powerful chemical dose.

Acid wash requires you to drain the pool until it is empty and then apply a thin layer of acid solution on the side walls and bottom surface of the pool. Acid wash helps you to remove chemical and metal stains, calcium deposits and algae, which is not possible with normal pool cleaning.

Acid wash suits which type of pools?

Do you know that you cannot perform acid wash in all the pools. It can be performed only on pools that have plaster or Pebble Tec surfaces. If your pool is old with a very thin plaster, you cannot perform acid wash.

For such pools, you will be left with only one option, and that is to resurface the complete pool. You can consult a pool professional to guide you how often you can perform acid wash to your pool.

An acid wash can be harmful to the pool in the way that it removes a thin layer of the pool’s surface. Hence, you should not perform it too often. You can plan it once a year to reduce the chances of getting the pool into repairs like resurfacing.

It is better to avoid acid wash as much as you can, and that is possible only when you maintain normal cleaning regularly. As a part of normal cleaning, you will need to scrub the walls and surface to avoid the building up of calcium deposits and algae layers on the pool bottom and wall’s surface.

When should you hire a professional?

Many pool owners think to save pool maintenance cost by performing acid wash themselves at home. You should remember that chlorine and acid are hazardous chemicals and you may not be aware of risks and injury caused by them if you are not cautious. Moreover, if you do not perform acid wash in a proper way, you may be damaging your pool.

If you are aware of the risks involved in performing an acid wash to a pool, you can take some precautionary steps like wearing goggles, gloves, protective clothing and foot wear while washing the pool with acid.

If you are not serious about following safety guidelines, you may not be saving maintenance costs, but will risk your life. If you do not want to take a chance, then hiring a professional pool cleaner is the best option that you can make. It is quicker, effective, safer and will help you restore the look and feel of the pool.

    How to perform acid wash?

If you are confident that you have the ability and skills to perform acid wash while taking all the precautionary steps, here is the procedure for you:

Precautionary steps before performing acid wash:

Safety is very important while working with acid. Not only you, your pool also needs safety. So, you want to wash the acid from the pool surface as soon as possible and a helping assistant might come handy for you.

Hence, you will need the following:

    • Goggles
    • Rubber Boots
    • Protective Clothing
    • Face Mask
    • Helping assistant, who may also need precautionary accessories

Instructions to perform acid wash (10 Steps):

    • Step 1
    • Step 2
    • Step 3
    • step 4
    • Step 5
    • Step 6
    • Step 7
    • step 8
    • step 9
    • step 10

Refill the pool again and add required chemicals and adjust the pH balance.

Cost estimation if done by a professional

If you want acid pool cleaning to be performed by a professional, then you will need to bear the labour charges, but you will avoid all the risky injuries that you may not be aware of. You can contact your local pool store to help you with a trained professional who has good success record from his past client cases.

    Conclusion

Acid wash pool cost depends on how you want to perform it. If you want to get it done by a professional, you need not worry about any hassle and should just bear the service expenses.

The labour charges will cost you around $175 to $250 depending on the size of your pool and the professional from a specific service brand.
